Now you’re cooking with gas! Summertime means lots of different things…but a major aspect for most people (we use our outdoor grills year round) is firing up that backyard grill! We don’t always have time for charcoal or smoking with hardwoods, no problem, you can get great results from a gas grill. Just remember a few useful tips:
•Always pre-heat your grill on high with the lid closed for 10-15 mins
•Be sure to clean the grill grates with a heavy duty wire brush after pre-heating and before cooking
•Use vegetable oil on a clean rag or paper towels and a large pair of tongs to “season” the grates. This will prevent food from sticking and also give a more even crust and cook.
•Have a full back up tank on hand so you won’t run out of gas in the middle of cooking.
•Use your eyes, ears, and nose, and utilize those control knobs to control your heat. Remember hotter and faster is better for grilling, but burnt is bad. Backyard grilling requires engagement, so don’t throw your food on and go watch TV!
•Use an instant read thermometer for perfect, consistent results.
•Food continues to cook after you remove it from the grill, so if it’s fully cooked when you take it off…it will be over cooked by the time it hits the table.
Plan out your meal to have everything ready at the same time. You can make a delicious complete meal right on the grill. Use paper plates and reduce the clean up to the minimum. Grilled vegetable are awesome. Asparagus, baby bell peppers, corn, we could go on and on! All you really need is a little oil (or butter) and some salt. You can do it, we believe in you. Use aluminum foil, and make a little pouch to cook delicate fish, or potatoes. Wood skewers are great to keep food from falling through the grates. Just soak them in cold water so they won’t burn up. So get out there, crank that bad boy up and get grilling.
